Ex-IGPs Al Mamun, Shahidul remanded in murder cases

A Dhaka court yesterday remanded two former Inspectors General of Police (IGPs) Chowdhury Abdul-lah Al-Mamun and AKM Shahidul Hoque in separate cases over killing two persons here during student-mass uprising ending Sheikh Hasina’s 15 years autocratic rule.
Court sources said Mamun was placed on eight-day remand in the case lodged over murder grocery shop owner Abu Sayed in capital’s Mohammadpur area while Shahidul was placed on seven-day remand in the case filled over killing trader Abdul Wadud in the New Market area.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Akhteruzzaman passed the orders as police produced them before the court and pleaded to grant 10-day remand each.
Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun and AKM Shahidul Hoque were arrested by Detective Branch (DB) of police in the wee hours of yesterday.
Abu Sayed was killed as police started firing indiscriminately on agitating students and people in Bosila area under Mohammadpur Police Station around 4pm on July 19.
One SM Amir Hamja filed the case on August 13 against seven people including ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina over the death of Sayed. The other prominent accused in the case are Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun and Habibur Rahman.
Meanwhile, Abdul Wadud was killed in front of gate number 1 of the New Market in the capital on July 19. His relative Abdur Rahman filed the case on August 21 against 130 people including Sheikh Hasina, Obaidul Quader, Salman F Rahman and AKM Shahidul Hoque.
