Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami yesterday filed an appeal to the Supreme Court to get back its registration with the Election Commission (EC) as a political party.
“Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami has filed a petition to the Chamber Court of the Appellate Division for restoration of the appeal as it was ‘dismissed for default’ by the Supreme Court earlier, Jamaat’s lawyer Advocate Mohammad Shishir Monir told yesterday.
“If our appeal is allowed, we will get the registration back. We will get back the party symbol,” Advo-cate Shishir added saying then Jamaat-e-Isami will have no bar to take part in the national polls as a po-litical party.
The party decision to file the revival of the petitions came days after the interim government in an exec-utive order allowed Jamaat-e-Islami to carry on its activities.
The Election Commission earlier scrapped Jamaat’s registration while the erstwhile deposed government of Sheikh Hasina banned its activities on August 1, 2024.
