Train services in the eastern railway network were suspended for four days following severe flooding, submerging approximately 56 kilometers of tracks across various routes.
Among the submerged sections, 13 kilometres were heavily damaged.
The most affected area is a 7-kilometre stretch from Fazilpur to Feni on the Chittagong-Dhaka route, where one of the two tracks has been destroyed.
Flooding started on August 22 and impacted the Chittagong-Dhaka, Chittagong-Nazirhat, Chittagong-Cox’s Bazar, and Laksam-Noakhali railway lines.
The Divisional Engineering Office of the Eastern Railway reported that 56 kilometers of tracks were submerged, with about 13 kilometers suffering significant damage.
Officials from the Railway’s Eastern Zone have inspected the damaged areas but have yet to provide a cost estimate for repairs.
Train services on the affected routes have been gradually restored.
Limited service on the Dhaka-Chittagong line resumed on the night of August 26, with full services back to normal the following day.
Similarly, the Chittagong-Cox’s Bazar route reopened on August 24, three days after being closed due to track submersion and landslides.
The Railway Department is now focused on repairing the damaged tracks and ensuring the safe resumption of services across all affected routes.
