Two persons died and over 36 lakh people have been affected as the ongoing flood hit 10 districts due to the onrush of upstream water and nonstop rain over the last few days.
One person died in Feni and the other in Brahmanbaria district in the flood, according to the latest updates of the flood issued by the Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief.
The ongoing flood hit 495 unions under 65 upazilas in 10 districts leaving 5,86,040 families stranded and 36,45,552 people affected.
Feni, Cumilla, Khagrachhari, Noakhali, Chattogram, Moulvibazar, Habiganj, Brahmanbaria, Sylhet, and Lakshmipur districts have been affected in the flood since 20 August.
A total of 82,694 people and 7,755 cattle have been given refuge to 2,246 shelter centres while 506 medical teams have been formed and 492 of those are working to provide treatment to affected people in the districts.
Tk3,32,00,000 in cash, 19,650 tonnes of rice, and 15,000 packets of dry foods have been allotted.
The disaster management and relief ministry has opened a control room for providing information and support. The control room’s number is 0255101115.
Deputy commissioners of the flood-affected districts have been given necessary directives to work together in coordination with coordinators of Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, army, medical teams, and other volunteers.
Members of the Bangladesh Army and the Bangladesh Navy have remained deployed for rescue activities in the flood-hit areas in Feni.
The army sent its 160 members and 40 rescue vessels to Feni. Besides, one water treatment plant has been set up. The navy’s 71 members and eight rescue vessels are operating. Besides, more vessels have been brought and BGB members have also been deployed.
Bangladesh Meteorological Department on Thursday issued an emergency warning for heavy rainfall due to the active monsoon mainly in southern regions of the country, including the capital and Mymensingh district, in the midst of the current flood situation.
“Due to active monsoon, heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely to occur at places over Dhaka, Mymensingh, Khulna, Barisal, Chattogram, and Sylhet divisions, during the next 48 hours commencing 10am on Thursday,” the warning said.
Due to heavy rainfall, landslides may occur at places over the hilly regions of Chattogram division, it added.
