Chinese envoy meets BNP, reaffirms support for Bangladesh

Staff Reporter:

Emphasising China’s policy of non-intervention in the internal affairs of other nations, Chinese Ambas-sador to Dhaka, Yao Wen, reaffirmed on Wednesday China’s commitment to supporting Bangladesh and its people as it has in the past.
During a meeting yesterday with a BNP delegation, led by party Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, he also assured that China would enhance its investment in Bangladesh in the coming days to support the country’s development and the welfare of its people.
The Chinese envoy arrived at the BNP chairperson’s Gulshan office around 11am and held an hour-long meeting with the party delegation.
Briefing reporters after the meeting, Fakhrul said, “We had discussions in a very cordial atmosphere. We are very pleased to have had the Chinese Ambassador in our office after a long time.”
He said their party took the meeting with the Chinese envoy at their chairperson’s office very seriously, especially in the wake of the student-led mass movement.
Fakhrul said China has a strong commitment to the people of Bangladesh. “They have made it clear that they do not believe in hegemony. They had previously promised to always stand by the people of Bang-ladesh, considering its geopolitical situation, and they have now reiterated this commitment.”
He said their party appreciated China’s significant global role, particularly in providing economic assis-tance to the least-developed and developing countries.
The BNP leader mentioned that the Chinese Ambassador extended his greetings to BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia and Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman.
Fakhrul said Yao Wen believes the relationship and cooperation between the BNP and the Chinese Communist Party will continue to strengthen.
“We believe our relations with China will deepen, and we will advance our ties based on mutual trust,” Fakhrul said.
Yao Wen said they had a very productive discussion with the BNP Secretary General and the party lead-ership.
“We reviewed and discussed our cooperation during the meeting,” he said.
He said the Chinese Communist Party and the BNP share a strong relationship of friendly cooperation and exchange.
During the meeting, the Chinese envoy said they agreed to carry forward these excellent ties and to in-crease exchanges and cooperation in the future.
He also mentioned that they discussed the current situation in Bangladesh and reaffirmed China’s policy of offering support without interfering in the internal affairs of any country.
Yao Wen expressed hope that Bangladesh will attain stability and normalisation under the leadership of the interim government.
He reaffirmed full support for the interim administration, noting that the people of Bangladesh eagerly anticipate ongoing support and collaboration. “We are committed to working together to strengthen the relationship between Bangladesh and China,”
BNP Standing Committee members Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain, Dr Abdul Moyeen Khan, Vice-Chairman Altaf Hossain Chowdhury and Law Affairs Secretary Kaiser Kamal were present.
