President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir yesterday laid the foundation stone of the long-desired Thakurgaon University in Thakurgaon district.
At a foundation stone-laying ceremony was held in the Jamalpur area of Thakurgaon Sadar upazila, a press release from Bangabhaban said.
The public university will be constructed on 86 acres of land.
Addressing the function President Fakhrul Islam said the university will materialize a commitment of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman.
“University is not merely an institution of higher studies. It should be centre of knowledge, re-search, innovation and human resource development,” he said.
He expressed hope that Thakurgaon University would be new centre of modern and quality educa-tion at tertiary level in the northern part of the country and play an important role in producing skilled, competent and humane citizens for national development.
After laying the foundation stone, the President offered Munajat and prayed for the overall devel-opment and prosperity of the university.
Disaster and Relief Minister Asadul Habib Dulu, State Minister for Water Resources Farhad Hoss-ain Azad, University Grants Commission Chairman Professor Dr Mamun Ahmed, Thakurgaon Uni-versity Vice-Chancellor Mohammad Israfil, and senior officials were present at the event, among others.
