State Minister for Foreign Affairs Humaiun Kobir called on Gambia’s Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Dawda A Jallow, on the sidelines of the 23rd OIC Extraordinary Council of Foreign Ministers’ meeting in Jeddah on Thursday.
The Gambian Attorney General informed Humaiun that the International Court of Justice (ICJ) is expected to deliver its verdict in the case concerning the Rohingya genocide against Myanmar in October, said a press release.
Dawda A Jallow noted that the ICJ verdict on accountability for the atrocities committed against the Rohingyas would play a critical role in finding a sustainable solution to the Rohingya crisis.
Humaiun appreciated Gambia’s leadership in pursuing accountability for the Rohingyas before the ICJ. He stressed the importance of close cooperation between Bangladesh and The Gambia, particularly during Bangladesh Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman’s presidency of the UN General Assembly, to keep the Rohingya crisis high on the global agenda.
Gambia and Bangladesh should also cooperate on advancing efforts towards a comprehensive and sustainable solution, including the safe, dignified and voluntary return of the Rohingyas to Myanmar, Humaiun added.
