Six members of parliament did not cast their votes in the country’s 23rd presidential election on Thursday.
According to sources at the Parliament Secretariat, three of the lawmakers were from the BNP. They were Mirza Abbas, Osman Faruk and Mustafa Kamal Pasha.
In addition, expelled Jamaat-e-Islami MP Gazi Nazrul Islam, Khelafat Majlis MP Abul Hasan and independent MP Rumeen Farhana did not cast their ballots.
Parliament Secretariat sources said Mirza Abbas had informed the speaker in a letter that he would be unable to cast his vote as he was abroad for medical treatment.
The reasons why the other five MPs did not vote were not immediately known.
Meanwhile, BNP-nominated candidate Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has been elected Bangladesh’s 23rd president.
Fakhrul bagged 255 votes, defeating his rival Col (retd) Oli Ahmad, the 11-party alliance-nominated candidate, who secured 88 votes.
