A Dhaka court on Thursday ordered former reserved-seat lawmaker Ashika Sultana to be sent to jail after the completion of her remand in an anti-terrorism case filed with Mirpur Model Police Station.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Ariful Islam passed the order after Investigation Officer Sub-Inspector Al Mamun Hossain produced the accused before the court and sought her detention.
Earlier on 25 June, Ashika Sultana was arrested from the capital’s Mirpur. Later, the court initially granted a three-day remand, followed by another three-day remand on 29 June.
According to the case statement, on 19 June, 40–50 Awami League and Bangladesh Chhatra League activists allegedly brought out an anti-government procession at Mirpur-1. Police claimed that the procession was held to mark the Awami League’s 77th founding anniversary.
Police also claimed that information from a reliable source indicated Ashika’s involvement in the incident and alleged that she had financed activities of the banned Awami League.
