World Father’s Day is being celebrated yesterday in Bangladesh as elsewhere in the world with due re-spect to fathers, who are regarded as symbols of strength, courage and unwavering support in their chil-dren’s lives.
The day is celebrated annually on the third Sunday of June to honour fathers and recognize their invalu-able contributions to families and society.
Like many other countries, Bangladesh is also observing the occasion through various programmes and personal tributes, highlighting the sacrifices, dedication and unconditional love of fathers.
Father’s Day originated in the United States, with Sonora Smart Dodd played a pioneering role in estab-lishing international recognition for the celebration of the day worldwide.
Before 1909, there was no tradition of celebrating Father’s Day in Washington. Dodd learned about Mother’s Day at a local church and was surprised that while mothers were honored with a special day, fathers had no similar recognition.
Having lost her mother at an early age, Dodd was raised, along with her six siblings, by her father, who single-handedly cared for and supported the family through many hardships. Inspired by his sacrifice and devotion, she began campaigning for a day dedicated to fathers.
After a year of persistent efforts, Father’s Day was observed locally for the first time on June 19, 1910, marking the beginning of what would later become a globally recognized occasion.
