A flag return ceremony and press conference were held at the National Press Club in Dhaka on Friday to honour Bangladeshi female mountaineer Nurunnahar Nimni following her successful ascent of Mount Everest.
The programme took place at the Zahur Hossain Chowdhury Hall of the National Press Club at 10:30am.
Deputy Chief of Mission at the Embassy of Nepal in Bangladesh Lalita Silwal and prominent women’s rights activist Shireen Parveen Haque attended the event as honoured guests.
Assistant General Manager of Pubali Bank PLC Farzin Ahmed, representing the expedition’s sponsor, was present as a special guest. Everest conqueror M A Muhit conducted the press conference.
During the event, Nurunnahar Nimni formally returned the national flag that she carried to the summit of Everest and presented a slideshow on her expedition.
Located on the Nepal-Tibet border, Mount Everest stands at 8,848 metres (29,029 feet) above sea level.
Nimni left Dhaka for Nepal on 11 April 2026 and began trekking from Lukla on 14 April. After walking about 75 kilometres, she reached the Everest Base Camp at an altitude of 17,600 feet on 22 April.
As the upper camp routes had not yet opened, she climbed Lobuche East, standing at 20,075 feet, on 1 May as part of her acclimatisation process.
She crossed the dangerous Khumbu Icefall on 6 May and reached Camp-1 at 19,600 feet. She later advanced to Camp-2 at 21,000 feet before descending back to the base camp on 9 May.
Nimni began her final summit push on 17 May, crossing Camps 1 and 2 before reaching Camp-3 at 23,950 feet on 21 May.
Although she set out for Camp-4 on 22 May, adverse weather conditions forced her to descend to Camp-2.
She resumed the final ascent from Camp-2 on 25 May and eventually reached Camp-4, located at 25,900 feet, on 29 May.
At 6:30pm that evening, accompanied by guides Dawa Sherpa and Lakpa Sherpa, she began the final climb to the summit. After crossing the perilous Hillary Step, Nurunnahar Nimni reached the summit of Mount Everest at 5:24am Nepal time on 27 May 2026.
Prior to the Everest expedition, she received basic mountaineering training in India and had successfully climbed one 6,000-metre and one 7,000-metre peak.
The Everest expedition was organised by the Bangla Mountaineering and Trekking Club and sponsored by Pubali Bank PLC.
