A 70-tonne capacity modern floating crane, built by the Bangladesh Navy-operated Dockyard and Engineering Works Limited (DEW), has been formally handed over to the Bangladesh Navy, marking a significant boost to its logistics, repair, and maintenance capabilities.
The vessel, named BNFC Boliyan, was officially handed over on Thursday at a ceremony attended by Chief of Naval Staff Admiral M Nazmul Hassan as the chief guest, said a press release.
Senior officials from Naval Headquarters, including principal staff officers (PSOs), as well as senior officers from the navy and DEW Limited, were also present at the event.
As part of the navy’s ongoing modernisation drive and in line with future operational requirements, the project to construct the floating crane was undertaken at DEW using domestic technology.
The keel-laying ceremony for the vessel was held on 30 June 2024, officially marking the beginning of its construction.
The floating crane measures 45 metres in length, 15 metres in width, and has a depth of 3 metres. It is capable of reaching a maximum speed of 10.5 miles per hour. With a lifting capacity of 70 tonnes, the platform is expected to play a crucial role in the repair and maintenance of Bangladesh Navy ships both at jetties and in offshore conditions.
It will also support complex technical operations, including the lifting, transfer, and installation of heavy machinery, mechanical equipment, and various naval components, improving both efficiency and safety in operations.
Officials said the vessel, built using local technical expertise and modern engineering standards, reflects the growing capability of Bangladesh’s shipbuilding industry.
The floating crane is expected to enhance the operational and logistical strength of the Bangladesh Navy significantly, while also contributing to national self-reliance in the defence sector.
Authorities added that the Dockyard and Engineering Works Limited continues to play an important role in strengthening maritime security and defense capabilities through the construction of various naval platforms using indigenous technology and skilled manpower.
