The death toll from a collision between two buses in the Nadda area under Bhatara Thana has risen to four, while at least 10 others were injured, police said on Wednesday (27 May).
Authorities said the identities of the victims were initially unknown, but later identified the deceased as Laiju Begum, 38; Kabir Jomaddar, 47; Khushi Begum, 35; and Md. Robiul, 22.
According to eyewitnesses, an Islam Paribahan bus operating on the Dhaka-Barishal route rammed into an Akash Paribahan bus from behind in the Nadda area during the morning. Following the impact, the Islam Paribahan bus lost control and overturned onto the road divider.
The collision severely damaged the rear portion of the Akash Paribahan bus, leaving one person dead at the scene.
After receiving the news around 6:15am, a Fire Service rescue team rushed to the site and began rescue operations. With assistance from locals, injured passengers were rescued and taken to Kurmitola General Hospital and Baridhara General Hospital.
Three more victims later died while undergoing treatment, raising the death toll to four.
Police said traffic movement has now returned to normal after the damaged buses were removed from the road using wreckers.
