ICT indicts Nanak, Fazle Taposh, 26 others over killings

The International Crimes Tribunal (ICT)-1 yesterday framed charges in a case involving alleged crimes against humanity committed in Mohammadpur during the July Mass Uprising, with 28 accused, includ-ing former minister Jahangir Kabir Nanak and former Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) mayor Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh.
The first tribunal, headed by Justice Golam Martuza Majumder, passed the order this morning. The court also set June 8 for the prosecution’s opening statement and to start recording the deposition of the wit-nesses.
Four of the total 28 accused are now behind bars. They are- leaders of the banned Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL)- Naimul Hasan Russel, Sajjad Hossain, Omar Faruk, and Fazle Rabbi.
The tribunal on January 18, 2026, showed the four arrested in the case and sent them to jail. It also is-sued arrest warrants against the other 24 on that day.
According to the prosecution, at the instigation and provocation of the accused, and with their direct and indirect presence, innocent students and public were shot during the July Mass Uprising.
“As a result, nine people, including Mahmudur Rahman Saikat and Farhan Faiyaz, were martyred in the Mohammadpur area, while many others were injured. The prosecution has sufficient evidence, including video footage, in this regard,” the then chief prosecutor Muhammad Tajul Islam said on January 18.
The other notable accused in the case are- former Dhaka Metropolitan Police Commissioner Habibur Rahman and former additional DIGs Biplob Kumar Sarker and Proloy Kumar Joarder.
