Govt committed to ensure media freedom: Swapon

Information and Broadcasting Minister Zahir Uddin Swapon yesterday said the incumbent government is committed to ensuring media freedom.
At the same time, he said, it is equally important to protect people from the risks of misinformation and disinformation.
The minister made the remarks when US Ambassador in Dhaka Brent T. Christensen paid a courtesy call on him at his office yesterday.
During the meeting, they discussed strengthening mutual relations and increasing media, cultural and knowledge-based cooperation between the two countries.
Swapon emphasised bringing digital platforms under a system of rules and regulations in the current technology-dependent world.
He said all countries of the world must work together to prevent misuse of digital platforms.
The information minister stressed the need for ensuring transparency and accountability along with free-dom of the press.
The information minister raised the issue of the recent tragic murder of two Bangladeshi students in Florida, USA, and expressed hope that a fair trial would be held.
The US Embassy delegation informed the Bangladesh information minister that the accused in that inci-dent has already been arrested.
Senior officials of the US Embassy were present at the meeting.
