12 held with 6,000 litres diesel while smuggling to Myanmar

Members of the Bangladesh Coast Guard arrested 12 suspected smugglers with 6,000 litres of diesel while attempting to smuggle it to Myanmar from the city’s Patenga area early Saturday.

The detainees included eight Rohingya individuals, said Coast Guard Media Officer Lieutenant Commander Sabbir Alam Sujan.

According to him, a search operation was carried out at the outer anchorage of the Bay of Bengal in Patenga at dawn, during which a motorised boat was intercepted.

The Coast Guard recovered around 6,000 litres of diesel worth about Tk624,000, six gas-filled cylinders and Tk15,896 in cash from the boat, he said.

Legal action against the arrestees and the seized items is under process, he added.
