Staff Reporter:
Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has decided to refrain from hosting large and elaborate iftar gatherings this year in consideration of the overall situation in the country.
Instead, he will participate in only two iftar events at the state guesthouse Jamuna, Prime Minister’s Additional Press Secretary Atikur Rahman Ruman confirmed on Thursday.
He said the prime minister has limited the arrangements to just two iftar programmes after assessing the country’s overall circumstances.
According to the schedule, an iftar will be held on Friday in honour of diplomats, while another will take place on Saturday (7 March) for orphans, Islamic scholars and religious leaders.
Both events will be hosted at Jamuna.
The additional press secretary also said that previously scheduled iftar gatherings for politicians on 8 March and for media professionals on 10 March have been cancelled in light of the prevailing situation.
Traditionally, the prime minister hosts state-sponsored iftar gatherings each year for people from different professions and segments of society.
However, after assuming office, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has chosen to observe iftar privately with family members at his residence this year instead of arranging large-scale state events.
