Shafiqur questions whether ‘extortion’ has been nationalised

Staff Reporter:

Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer and opposition leader Shafiqur Rahman has questioned whether the government has announced the nationalisation of “extortion” through the newly appointed minister of road transport, rail, and shipping.

In a post on his verified Facebook page on Friday night, Shafiqur wrote, “Has the announcement of nationalising extortion been made through the minister of road transport and bridges of the newly formed government? How will the source of corruption be controlled? Nothing makes sense. From the very beginning, which direction is Bangladesh heading?”

The opposition leader further addressed the public, saying, “Dear citizens, to be free from the shadow of extortion, we must fight. We are with you in this struggle, Insha’Allah.”

The post comes in the wake of a recent statement by Shaikh Rabiul Alam, minister of road transport, rail, and shipping, regarding funds collected in the name of owners’ and workers’ organisations in the transport sector.

His remarks were widely criticised and sparked strong reactions. In this context, Shafiqur raised concerns about potential mismanagement and corruption through extortion.
