Man set on fire after identifying snatchers in Shariatpur

Staff Reporter:

A man was set on fire for identifying his attackers, who robbed him of money, in Damudya upazila, Shariatpur on Wednesday night.

Khokon Das, 50, is now undergoing treatment at a hospital in Dhaka with life-threatening injuries, said Shah Alam, officer-in-charge at Palang Model Police Station in Shariatpur Sadar Upazila.

Legal actions will be taken in this regard, the officer added.

Before Khokon was taken to a local hospital in Shariatpur, a video had reportedly circulated where he gives the names of his attackers.

According to police and eyewitnesses, Khokon runs a medicine shop in Keurbhanga bazar of Damudya upazila. He also serves as a bKash agent at the shop.

On Wednesday, he shuttered his store and headed for home. Near his home in Tiloi area, a group of three snatchers indiscriminately hacked him and snatched cash from his possession.

In the initial stage of the hacking attack, he spelled out the names of at least two of the miscreants. Someone filmed the statement.

Soon afterwards, the attackers poured flammable material on Khokon’s face and body, and set him alight. Hearing his screams, local people rushed to the spot, prompting the criminals to flee. The locals rushed Khokon to the Shariatpur Sadar Hospital.

He was taken to the hospital with a deep wound in his belly, injury marks from sharp weapons on the head, and burn injuries to his hand and head, said the hospital’s Duty Doctor Md Nazrul Islam.

Due to the serious conditions, he was referred to a hospital in Dhaka, Nazrul added.
