Glorious Victory Day observed
Rich tributes paid to martyred LW heroes

Staff Reporter:

On the occasion of Victory Day, a huge influx of people from all walks of life gathered at the National Memorial in Savar to pay homage to the nation’s heroic sons who laid down their lives for independence.

From early Tuesday, thousands of people from different parts of the country thronged the memorial to remember the fallen martyrs.

After the President and the Chief Adviser paid their respects, the memorial premises were opened to the general public. People from all sections of society observed the day with solemn reverence, honouring the nation’s heroic sons.

Members of various organisations, students from schools and colleges, political leaders, freedom fighters and family members of martyrs crowded the memorial grounds. Many arrived carrying flowers, banners and festoons, laying wreaths and offering floral tributes, leaving the martyrs’ altar covered in flowers.

As the day progressed, thousands more continued to pay tribute with flowers, while also sharing in the joy of Victory Day celebrations.

The presence of children was particularly noticeable. Some were seen with images of the national flag painted on their faces and hands, while others carried drawings of the memorial itself.

Defying the winter cold, war-wounded freedom fighters also came to the memorial to honour the nation’s finest sons. Many had the national flag painted in red and green on their foreheads, while others waved the flag in their hands. Red and green were also prominently displayed in their clothing.

Many visitors took the opportunity to meet the freedom fighters, offering salutes and paying their respects.

Earlier, President Mohammed Shahabuddin and Chief Adviser Dr Muhammad Yunus paid floral tributes at the National Martyrs’ Memorial on Victory Day, honouring those who sacrificed their lives for the country’s independence.
