Staff Reporter:
At least “July Fighters” were admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) after being injured in a police baton charge during a clash near the National Parliament area on Friday.
However, none of them were reported to be in critical condition, said police officials stationed at the hospital.
The injured were identified as Synthiya Mim, Shafiqul Islam, Shafiullah, Habib Ullah, Tanvirul Islam, Saiful Islam, Atikul Gazi, Rakib, and Laili.
According to injured activist Atikul Gazi, a resident of Uttara, they had gathered at Manik Mia Avenue to protest the signing of the July Charter signing ceremony scheduled for Friday. “Police charged batons to disperse us, and many of us were injured in the random attack,” he said.
Md Faruk, in-charge of the DMCH police camp, confirmed that the injured were being treated at the hospital’s emergency department and that their condition was stable.
Earlier, around 10:30am, more than 500 agitated protesters broke through the security barricade and sat inside the South Plaza of the Parliament premises, occupying the main stage and the designated area for guests at the July Charter signing ceremony.
The protesters alleged that the government prepared the charter without consulting them and that the initiative lacked proper legal recognition, amounting to a form of devaluation of their contribution.
