EU to send poll observers

Staff Reporter:

BNP standing committee member Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury yesterday said the European Union (EU) has decided to send election observers to Bangladesh for the upcoming national election.
“The EU has made the decision in response to requests from both the government and the Election Commission. They are keen to witness a free, fair, and credible election in Bangladesh,” Khosru told reporters following a meeting between BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and EU Ambassador to Bangladesh Michael Miller at the BNP Chairperson’s office in Gulshan this morning.
Khosru said the discussion primarily focused on the forthcoming national election, likely to be held in the first half of February 2026, and the overall electoral environment.
The BNP leader noted the EU always played an important role in Bangladesh’s electoral processes and is expected to continue its engagement this time as well.
He added the meeting also covered a range of other important topics, including economic and trade rela-tions, institutional reforms, and the broader need to strengthen democratic practices in Bangladesh.
The EU Ambassador arrived at the BNP Chairperson’s office around 11:00am, and the meeting lasted approximately one hour and ten minutes.
BNP standing committee members Dr. Abdul Moin Khan, Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury, and cen-tral organizing secretary Shama Obaid were present at the meeting, among others.
