The Advisory Council on Thursday decided to form an independent investigation service for the Bangladesh Police so that inquiries can be conducted free from political or any other external influences.
Chief Adviser’s Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam said this at a press briefing at the Foreign Service Academy in Dhaka this afternoon following the Council meeting.
Prof Yunus chaired the meeting held at his office in the city’s Tejgaon area.
The Advisory Council also directed establishing a separate commission to examine internal complaints within the police, Shafiqul Alam said, adding, “The Ministry for Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs will work to implement these two decisions as soon as possible.”
Advisers Asif Nazrul and Adilur Rahman Khan, and Chief Adviser’s Special Assistant on Home Affairs Md Khuda Baksh Chowdhury will be involved in this process, he said.
Noting that the meeting put emphasis on strengthening the local government institutions, the press secretary said, “The chief adviser repeatedly emphasised that local government bodies must be empowered further. He instructed taking measures so that union parishads, upazila parishads, zila parishads, municipalities, and city corporations can raise their own funds and manage them transparently.”
About challenges in the health sector, Shafiqul said, “Some medical colleges are facing shortages of qualified teachers. Therefore, initiatives will be taken to engage retired teachers as consultants or in other roles to improve the quality of education.”
The meeting also discussed the situation of Bangladeshis who are now in Nepal, he said, adding, “Bangladeshis in Nepal are safe and the Bangladesh Embassy is taking care of them. Arrangements have already been made to bring the national football team home on a special flight of the Bangladesh Air Force.”
Shafiqul said, “Every decision taken at today’s meeting will further strengthen Bangladesh’s economy, governance and our position in the international arena.”
Chief Adviser’s Deputy Press Secretary Abul Kalam Azad Majumder was present at the briefing.
