Protesters attack, vandalise Jatiya Party central office again

Staff Reporter:

Leaders and activists of the Gana Adhikar Parishad attacked and vandalised the Jatiya Party central office in the capital’s Kakrail on Friday evening, setting fire to parts of the building.

The situation escalated when police arrived about half an hour after the attack. To regain control, law enforcers used water cannons and sound grenades against the protesters. The crowd, however, became more agitated. Police later managed to gradually push the protesters away from the office and attempted to extinguish the fire.

The attack followed a solidarity rally organised by Gana Adhikar Parishad in front of the National Museum at Shahbagh, demanding the resignation of the Home Adviser and other measures over alleged police action against the party president Nurul Haque Nur.

After the rally, the protesters moved towards their central office in Paltan, then proceeded to attack the Jatiya Party office in Kakrail.

A similar incident occurred on 31 August, when a group of protesters vandalised the Jatiya Party central office and set parts of it on fire. Police intervened at that time, dispersing the crowd with baton charges.
