CA to hold meet with political parties today to discuss JS poll issue

Staff Reporter:

Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus will hold a meeting with the country’s major political parties on Sunday to discuss the upcoming general election, likely to be held in the first half of February next year.

Shafiqul Alam, press secretary to the chief adviser, said this while speaking to reporters on contemporary issues, including politics, in front of Jamuna, the official residence of the chief adviser, on Saturday.

Top leaders of BNP, Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami and National Citizen Party (NCP) will participate in the meeting, he said.

The chief adviser is going to hold the meeting at a time when the country’s political situation has heated up following the attack on Gono Odhikar Parishad President Nurul Haque Nur, allegedly carried out by activists of Jatiya Party, widely known as a domestic opposition of the ousted Awami League government.

Meanwhile in a statement, the government said that the 13th parliamentary election must be held on schedule in the first half of February next year.

This is the solemn commitment of the interim government, said the statement of the government floated for the media on Saturday, following the country’s evolving political situation.

“All conspiracies, obstructions or attempts to delay or derail the election will be firmly resisted by the government and our democracy-loving patriotic people,” it said.

“The people’s will must prevail and no evil force will be allowed to undermine our march to democracy,” added the statement.
