Leaders and activists of the Jatiya Party (JaPa) and Gono Odhikar Parishad clashed in Dhaka’s Kakrail area on Friday evening, leaving several people, including Nurul Haque Nur, severely injured.
Nur was rescued by his fellow workers and rushed to a hospital as his condition deteriorated.
The incident took place in front of the JaPa central office.
Citing allegations from both sides, Police said Gono Odhikar Parishad activists brought out a procession and attacked the JaPa office, while Gono Odhikar Parishad claimed it was JaPa men who hurled bricks at them as they were passing by.
Masud Alam, deputy commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s Ramna Division, said around 6:30pm that the clash broke out when a Gono Odhikar Parishad procession passed by the JaPa office.
JaPa activists came out of the office, leading to chasing, counter-chasing, and brick-throwing between the two groups.
The violence continued for about half an hour until the army and police intervened to restore order.
Several people from both sides were injured during the clash, and traffic in the area came to a standstill before resuming once the situation was brought under control, Ramna police said.
