A rickshaw puller was beaten by a mob at Dhanmondi 32 in the capital on Friday afternoon while attempting to pay tribute to Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman on his death anniversary.
The victim Azizur Rahman, 45, a resident of Ghorashal village under Jhenaidah Sadar Police Station, had come to the area with a bouquet of flowers in hand.
According to police and eyewitnesses, the incident occurred around noon when Azizur attempted to approach the main road, ignoring a police barricade.
Seeing this, people stationed at the barricade stopped him and questioned his intentions.
During the interrogation, Azizur reportedly said that he was not affiliated with any political party and had come solely out of respect for Bangabandhu. However, an argument ensued, and the crowd, growing agitated, physically assaulted him and attempted to force him away.
Police officers on duty quickly intervened, rescued Azizur from the mob, and took him into custody for his safety before helping him leave the area.
Witnesses further said that several individuals, including women, faced harassment throughout the day at Dhanmondi 32 as they came to pay their respects.
Police also confirmed that two people were detained in the area on Thursday night (14 August).
