Three people were beaten by a mob and handed over to police on Thursday night on suspicion of being Awami League activists at Dhanmondi 32, where students and some people were trying to gather, marking 15 August.
The incident took place around 8:30 pm, said a witness, adding that a man at the scene was on a video call showing the situation to someone else.
When images of Sheikh Hasina and Sheikh Mujibur Rahman were seen on the other person’s phone screen, the people became enraged and assaulted him indiscriminately.
On information, police rushed to the spot and rescued the man from the mob beating. Later, the law enforcers took him away in a police van from the spot.
The protesters claimed they also saw photos of Sheikh Hasina and Sheikh Mujibur Rahman on his phone.
A protester alleged that Sheikh Hasina’s son Sajeeb Wazed Joy instructed Awami League leaders and activists to gather at Dhanmondi 32 to mark 15 August.
Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and his family members were assassinated on 15 August 1975 and the day had been marked annually as National Mourning Day in Bangladesh.
