Water level recedes in Cumilla’s Gomti River as rains ease

Staff Reporter:

The water level in the Gomti River in Cumilla has started receding as rainfall has been easing, authorities said on Friday.

According to the Cumilla Water Development Board (WDB), the river’s water level began to drop from midnight and was recorded at 8.94 metres at 9am on Friday, down from 9.20 metres on Thursday evening.

Executive Engineer of the WDB, Khan Md Waliuzzaman said the water level is gradually falling with the reduction in rainfall. “If there is no heavy rain at the river’s source in Tripura, India, the water level is expected to decrease further,” he added.

Locals said water has started to recede from the flood-affected char areas of the river and city (Cumilla) areas.

Over the past 24 hours, Cumilla recorded 57 millimetres of rainfall.

Md Arifur Rahman, acting officer at the Cumilla Meteorological Office, said that rainfall has decreased and is likely to decline further throughout the day.

Over the past few days, continuous rainfall and upstream flow from the hills had caused the Gomti River’s water level to rise, bringing it close to the danger mark.

Mentionable, the danger level for the river in Cumilla is set at 11.30 metres.
