A former leader of Jatiyatabadi Jubo Dal, the youth front of BNP, was shot to death by miscreants in Daulatpur area of Khulna city on Friday, police said, quoting witnesses.
The deceased, Molla Mahbubur Rahman, was the former vice-president of Daulatpur Thana unit of Jubo Dal.
The incident took place around noon in front of his house at Maheshwar Pasha Paschimpara, said Mir Atahar Ali, officer-in-charge of Daulatpur Police Station.
A three-member gang of miscreants riding a motorcycle came near Mahbub and shot at him indiscriminately when he was washing his car in front of his house, the OC quoted a witness as saying.
As he fell to the ground, the attackers hacked him and severed his tendons, then managed to flee the spot without any resistance, according to the police official.
Mahbub became unruly after the 5 August changeover and was involved in feuds with his rival group over drug trading in the area. He also came under attack several times in the past in this connection.
The OC said they are investigating whether the murder was a sequel to the conflict, the OC said adding that an effort is underway to arrest the criminals involved in the killing incident.
Mahbub came into the spotlight on 18 February during a clash between students and political activists at Khulna University of Engineering and Technology (KUET), when a photo of him brandishing a machete went viral on social media.
Later, he was expelled from his vice president post, but continued the political activities of BNP.
