Detective Branch (DB) of police yesterday apprehended former Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Kazi Habibul Awal from the capital’s Moghbazar area.
His arrest came two days after the detention of another former CEC, KM Nurul Huda, in a case filed against them and 22 others for alleged manipulation of national elections.
Kazi Habibul Awal was arrested around 2pm yesterday, Deputy Commissioner of DB (Media and Public Relations) Muhammad Talebur Rahman said.
He was taken to the DB office on Minto Road, he added.
Nurul Huda and Habibul Awal were CECs during the parliamentary election in 2018 and 2024 respec-tively.
Earlier, a Dhaka court granted a four-day remand for Nurul Huda in the case on June 23, a day after his arrest from his Uttara residence in the evening of June 22.
BNP national executive committee member Md Salah Uddin Khan filed the case with Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station on Sunday against 24 individuals, including ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and three former CECs, for manipulating the national elections in 2014, 2018 and 2024.
Former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, four former Inspectors General of Police (IGP), sev-eral former Election Commissioners and former chiefs of Special Branch (SB), National Security Intel-ligence (NSI) and Directorate General of Forces Intelligence (DGFI) were accused in the case.
