Md Mahathir Hasan, a student of Primeasia University arrested in connection with the murder of fellow student Jahidul Islam Parvez, gave a confessional statement in court on Thursday.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Minhazur Rahman recorded Mahathir’s statement and ordered him to be sent to jail.
Mahathir, who was detained on Wednesday at a residence in the Azad Tower area under Halishahar Police Station in Chattogram, appeared in court and voluntarily confessed to his involvement in the killing. Banani Police Inspector AKM Moin Uddin brought him to Dhaka to have the statement recorded.
According to the case statement, Jahidul Islam Parvez, a student of the Textile Engineering Department, was stabbed to death around 4pm on 19 April following a dispute among students on the Primeasia University campus in Banani.
The following day, Parvez’s cousin, Humayun Kabir, filed a case with Banani Police Station naming eight individuals, including two leaders of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, and accusing 25-30 unidentified others.
On 21 April, three suspects — Al Kamal Sheikh, Alvi Hosen Junayed, and Al Amin Sunny — were placed on a seven-day remand. Kamal later confessed and gave a statement in court on 23 April.
That same day, Md Hridoy Miyaji, joint general secretary of the Banani Thana unit of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, was also placed on a seven-day remand.
