Myanmar agrees to take back 1.8 lakh Rohingya refugees in first phase

The Myanmar government has agreed to take back 1 lakh 80 thousand Rohingyas from Bangladesh, said Chief Adviser’s High Representative Dr Khalilur Rahman following a meeting with Myanmar officials in Bangkok on Friday.

This is the first such confirmed list that constitutes a major step toward the longstanding resolution of the Rohingya crisis.

Documents of another 70,000 Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh are already being reviewed for repatriation, Myanmar Deputy Prime Minister U Than Shew told Dr Khalilur Rahman at the meeting held on the sidelines of the sixth BIMSTEC Summit.

The original list of 8 lakh Rohingya refugees was provided by Bangladesh in six batches during 2018-20.

On Friday, the Myanmar authorities also confirmed that the verification of the remaining 5,50,000 Rohingyas on the original list will be undertaken on an expeditious basis.

During the meeting with U Than Shew, also Myanmar’s foreign minister, Dr Khalilur Rahman expressed his condolences for the earthquake victims of Myanmar and said Bangladesh was ready to send further humanitarian support for the disaster-stricken people.
