The Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) conducted drives at different bus and launch terminals on Wednesday to prevent transport owners from collecting extra fares and alleviate the sufferings of the passengers during the Eid journey.
On information, a mobile court launched a crackdown on Labiba Paribahan, Sonartari Paribahan, and Seba Green Line Paribahan in Mirpur and fined each Tk 10,000, totaling Tk 30,000, for overcharging passengers in violation of the rules.
Earlier in the day, Bangladesh Jatri Kalyan Samity (BJKS), a nonprofit passenger welfare organisation, accused the transport owners of overcharging passengers during this year’s Eid journey.
“The overcharging of bus fare from the holidaymakers seems to me as a daylight robbery,” Mozammel Haque Chowdhury, secretary general of the BJKS, made the allegation while addressing a press conference in Dhaka on Wednesday.
He said that the public transport owners could pocket around Tk 850 crore from passengers during this year’s Eid journey.
