CJ for independent secretariat for judiciary under SC

Staff Reporter:

Chief Justice Syed Refaat Ahmed has urged the interim government to establish an independent secretariat for the judiciary under the Supreme Court to ensure the effective independence of the judiciary.

“It would enable the interim government’s reform efforts to be sustainable and meaningful,” he said.

The chief justice came up with the statement while speaking at an iftar programme arranged by the Bangladesh Ain Samity at the Supreme Court Bar auditorium in the capital on Monday.

He viewed that the long-term sustainability of the reform initiatives undertaken by the interim government depends to a large extent on the independence of the judiciary.

“An independent judiciary can only function effectively when the institutional independence of the judiciary is ensured through establishing an independent judicial secretariat,” Refaat Ahmed said.

He expressed his hope that the Ain Samity will be able to play an important role in the implementation of proposals related to law and judicial service reform by actively participating in the reform initiatives of the interim government, conducting discussions with stakeholders, providing advice on various policy issues and uniting professionals associated with the legal profession.

The CJ said the coming days are very important for achieving institutional autonomy of the judiciary.
