Election to extremely be difficult as police in fragile state now: Nahid

Staff Reporter:

Nahid Islam, chief of the National Citizen Party (NCP), has said that holding the 13th parliamentary election will be extremely difficult due to the current fragile state of the police.

He made the observation while addressing a press conference held at his party’s Bangla Motor office in Dhaka on Friday.

Earlier on Thursday, the NCP chief, who recently resigned as an adviser to the interim government, said that holding the next general election this year will be challenging due to administrative failures in ensuring public safety across the country.

“The post-mass upsurge state of Bangladesh police seems extremely fragile. Holding the national election will be very difficult amid the prevailing circumstances,” he said.

While addressing various programmes and giving interviews to many international news media on different occasions, Chief Adviser Prof. Mohammad Yunus has repeatedly said that the next general election will be held between December 2025 and March 2026.

After holding the helm of the newly formed National Citizen Party (NCP), Nahid appears to be backpedalling on the next general election, while the BNP has become increasingly vocal in demanding that the election be held as soon as possible.

“We must improve our policing system and law and order situation before holding the national election. Alongside the government, all political and social forces must come forward to reach the goal,” he said.

Clarifying his party’s stance, Nahid said that his party men are mentally prepared to participate in the next general election. At the same time, his party also wants to see the holding of the constituent assembly and the parliamentary election simultaneously, he added.

Apart from the elections, Nahid said his party also wants to see the trials of the case lodged against the people involved in carrying out attacks on people during the recent mass upsurge.

The NCP convener also expressed his utter frustration and condemnation against the growing spate of crime against women and said that women are being targeted in the cyber world so that they cannot keep their feet in politics and come to the forefront in society.
