Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina timely responds to any disaster and stands by affected people, Md Shahid Ullah Khandaker former senior secretary said yesterday.
Awami League government has been working to fight climate change and tackle disaster, said Shahid Ullah, now entrusted with implementing development projects in Awami League President and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s constituency Gopalganj-3.
He was addressing a view-exchange meeting with the businessmen affected by fire at Ghagar Bazar in Kotalipara under Gopalganj on Tuesday. He also distributed cheques among the fire victims.
“Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has received international awards. She is never perplexed by any disaster. Rather, she tackles the situation with patience,” he added.
Referring to recent fire incidents in various places, he said the government is supporting and rehabilitating the effected businessmen in various ways.
“The businessmen of Ghagar Bazar have received initial support. After return from Japan, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will do more for the fire victims in her constituency. I am visiting the area as per her directive,” he said.
About logistic support to farmers, he said Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has given four machines to facilitate harvest of Boro paddies.
“Kotalipara has seen bumper production of Boro due to cultivation of all possible lands as per directive of the Prime Minister. The farmers were struggling to harvest the paddies amid labour crisis. So, four harvesters were given.”
Upazila Nirbahi Officer Ferdous Wahid presided over the view-exchange meeting attended by Upazila Awami League president Bhabendra Nath Biswas, general secretary Ainal Hossain Sheikh, vice-president Mujibur Rahman Hawladar, municipality mayor Motiar Rahman Hazra, general secretary of Ghagor Bazar Business Association Mostafa Kamal, and Upazila Chhatra League president Mehdi Hasan Moon.
Mostafa Kamal said 34 shops were gutted as the market caught fire Saturday night and the cheques will be of great help.
“Most of the businessmen relied on bank loans. They would not be able to overcome the loss in absence of government support,” he said.
