India’s Upper House of Parliament, Rajya Sabha, was informed on Thursday that the country did not respond to Bangladesh’s request for extradition of its ousted former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
In response to a query from lawmaker John Brittas, State Minister of External Affairs Kiriti Vardhan Singh told the upper house that Bangladesh has sought the extradition of Sheikh Hasina for offences allegedly committed before she came to India on 5 August 2024.
No response has been conveyed to the government of Bangladesh, he told the house.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs formally wrote to the government of India in December last year to facilitate the return of Sheikh Hasina.
Foreign Affairs Adviser Touhid Hossain said they have clearly informed India about Bangladesh’s position. The government conveyed that it wants her [Hasina] return for the judicial process.
