Govt to hold talks on July proclamation next week: Mahfuj

Staff Reporter:

The government will formally hold talks with political parties and other stakeholders to devise the much-talked-about July proclamation next week, Mahfuj Alam, an adviser of the interim government, said on Thursday.

“We hope that the July proclamation will include the tragic stories of those who have been harassed over the past 15 years,” he said while addressing a press conference held at the Foreign Service Academy in Dhaka this afternoon.

He said the discussion on the July proclamation is underway while the data collection on the incidents took place centring the 5 August also going on, he said.

The process of preparing the proclamation will not take much time, but consulting everyone might cause some delays, he said, urging the agitating students to remain calm.

Earlier on 6 January, Chief Adviser’s Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam while addressing a press conference at the same place, said the draft of the “July Proclamation” will be finalised after discussion with the country’s political parties.

On 30 December, the interim government announced that it will undertake initiatives to prepare a declaration on the July uprising, based on a national consensus.

The declaration will be adopted to solidify the unity of the people forged through the July uprising, reflecting its anti-fascist spirit and the demand for state reform.

The draft will incorporate the views of all political parties and students, including those of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement that spearheaded the mass uprising.

The declaration will articulate the perspective of the July uprising, the foundation of unity and the aspirations of the people, the press wing noted.

The move came after the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement decided to proclaim the July Declaration on 31 December, which ultimately postponed following the government’s announcement.
