RMG workers again block highway

A Correspondent:

Gazipur: Workers from five factories of T&Z Group in Gazipur returned to blocking the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway after briefly lifting their blockade earlier on Monday, demanding payment of their due wages.
The protest, which began on Saturday morning, has caused severe traffic disruptions, affecting commut-ers and transport services.
The workers, based in the Mogorkhal area, initially withdrew their blockade at 2 pm yesterday after re-ceiving an audio message from the Secretary of the Ministry of Industry. The message assured them that the government would release Tk 6 crore to cover part of their dues. However, just two hours later, the workers resumed the blockade, citing insufficient clarity about the full settlement of their outstanding payments.
The protests began after workers expressed frustration over delayed salary payments, including wages, overtime, and other dues.
In response to the situation, authorities, including the Gazipur Metropolitan Police, the army, and indus-trial police, intervened to remove the protesters from the highway. This allowed for the gradual resump-tion of traffic, which had been at a standstill for hours due to the blockade.
The situation escalated again after the workers returned to the road, halting traffic on both the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway and the Dhaka Bypass Road. Passenger buses, cargo trucks, and other vehicles were trapped in long queues, causing significant distress for those trying to commute to work.
Workers have vowed to continue their protests until their full dues are cleared. A meeting is scheduled at the Ministry of Labour where workers and factory owners will discuss the resolution of the remaining arrears.
