A court in Dhaka on Thursday placed former commissioner of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Asaduzzaman Mia on a seven-day remand in a case filed over the custodial death of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) leader Nuruzzaman Jony.
Metropolitan Magistrate Saiful Islam passed the order after the police produced the ex-DMP chief before the court this afternoon.
Khilgaon police station Sub-Inspector Golap Mahmud, also the investigating officer of the case, sought 10 days to grill Asaduzzaman, while the court allowed him seven days for interrogation.
On Wednesday night, a team of the Rapid Action Battalion-3 arrested the former DMP commissioner in the capital’s Mohakhali area.
Nuruzzaman Jony, former general secretary of Khilgaon unit Chhatra Dal, was apprehended by the law enforcers on 16 January 2015. Four days later, he died in a reported gunfight.
On 7 January 2015, Asaduzzaman Mia joined as the DMP commissioner and served the post till 13 September 2019.
On 3 September 2024, Jony’s father Yakub Ali filed a case with Khilgaon police station over killing his son in the name of crossfire in police custody.
