Nurul Haque Nur, president of a faction of Gono Odhikar Parishad, said that no political party should be allowed to gain absolute power and become dictatorial.
Nur, also a former VP of the Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU), said that to prevent any party from dominating the parliament unilaterally, his party is advocating for proportional representation in elections.
“To make the future parliament effective and ensure the value of every vote, every political party should have representation according to the proportion of votes they receive. We’ve seen over the past 50 years what happens when a single party holds absolute power,” he said.
Nur made these remarks as the chief guest at a reception event organised by the district branch of Gono Odhikar Parishad on Friday afternoon at the Central Shaheed Minar premises in Jhautala, Patuakhali.
Nur said, “If BNP forms a national government with those who have fought for 15 years and shed blood, then there will be an understanding with them. Otherwise, we will contest the election independently as an alternative coalition with an alternative force.”
