ISPR addresses rumours over troop carrying laptop in parliament area

Staff Reporter:

The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) on Thursday issued a statement in an attempt to debunk remours that a troop stole equipment from the National Parliament when general people stormed it on 5 August.

A video has been circulating on the social media of a troop carrying a laptop in the parliament area, and a background voice claims the soldier stole the IT product from inside the parliament like many civilians on that day.

However, the adding of background voice and social media rumours are simply attempts to tarnish the reputation of the troop in the video and of the Bangladesh Army.

On 5 August, as news emerged about Sheikh Hasina’s resignation from PM’s post and departure from the country, thousands of general people stormed Gano Bhaban and the National Parliament, stealing many items.

Many responsible civilians, however, collected some of the stolen items and handed them over to the nearest army outpost.

The troop in the video was collecting a laptop and a scanner from such responsible people, and was on his way to submit the equipment to the sergeant-at-arms of parliament.

The troop was only performing his duties as a responsible law enforcement personnel, ISPR said.

The claims to tarnish his image and that of the army were deplorable, ISPR said in its statement.
