Students threaten indefinite demos from 7 Sept demanding 35-yr job entry limit

Staff Reporter:

A group of students seeking government jobs have threatened to launch a continuous mass sit-in programme across the country from 7 September, unless the interim government raises the maximum job entry age limit from 30 years to 35 years.

Job seekers announced the demonstration programme at TSC of the University of Dhaka on Friday.

Demonstrations are already continuing in different districts and a countrywide human chain programme would be held on Saturday or Sunday under the banner of “35 Aspirant General Students,” they said.

The movement would continue till 7 September, and if the demand is still not met, sit-ins would continue across the country indefinitely until the government acquiesces, students warned.

Their demand is not only rational but also relevant, the students said urging the government to issue a notification in this regard without delay.

The Awami League government was ousted on one issue of discrimination, and thus the present government should also not promote another form of discrimination any longer, the students under the banner of “35 Aspirant” warned.

Otherwise, the student community would burst into anger, they said.

The movement has been going on for the last 12 years since 2012, and the demand has already been realised in 162 countries across the world, the students said trying to justify their cause.

Furthermore, at present, work is ongoing for building a discrimination-free country, they added, suggesting their demonstrations at this point of time to be all the more relevant.

A memorandum in this regard has already been sent to the office of Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus, the students said adding they are expecting all the other advisers of the interim government to honour their demand.
