‘Decision to ban Jamaat likely to be revoked soon’

Staff Reporter:

A lawyer for Jamaat-e-Islami yesterday said the decision to ban the party is likely to be revoked within quickest possible time.
“Steps will be taken to revive the appeal case filed with the apex court to get the registration back for Jamaat-e-Islami as a political party. This step will be taken once the gazette notification that banned Ja-maat is withdrawn. We hope the apex court will do justice to us,” Advocate Shishir Manir yesterday told newsmen at a press briefing at the Supreme Court.
The former Awami league government banned Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, its student wing Bangladesh Islami Chhatra Shibir and all its associate bodies as political party and organizations on August 1 under section 18(1) of the Anti-Terrorism Act, 2009.
“The fascist government fell on August 5 and after that meetings with all the political parties were held in Army headquarters and Bangabhaban on the same day. Jamaat-e-Islami was formally invited as one of the main political parties of the country at those meetings. Jamaat also played significant role in forming advisory council of the interim government,” Advocate Manir added.
The Jamaat-e-Islami lawyer said he hopes that a new gazette cancelling the previous order to ban the party will be published within shortest possible time.
