A quilt maker died after getting caught in a clash between students and police in Gazipur’s Sreepur upazila on Saturday.
Jahangir Alam, 45, worked at a local quilt making store and hailed from Satkhira. At one point during the student-police conflict, he was found lying on the road, prompting students to carry him to a nearby medical facility at Maona intersection for treatment. He died on the way.
Police have failed to confirm the circumstances of Jahangir’s death, but assume that he died by falling on the road, according to statements given by the Sreepur Police Station chief to reporters.
Israt Jahan, one of the coordinators of the student movement, said over a hundred students were injured in clash with police on Saturday. Police officers said many personnel were also injured and that a number of people had been arrested from Maona area.
Earlier, at 11am, the students started gathering at Palli Bidyut intersection at Maona. Activists of the ruling Awami League, its affiliate bodies and police personnel took positions below the Maona flyover. When a procession of students approached, the students mocked them using the expletive “fraud.”
As Awami Leauge brought out small processions around Maona, the students also spread out across the Four-way Maona intersection with sticks in their hands.
At one point, they vandalised three police boxes and set fire to these. Later, following a clash with police, they also vandalised three police vans.
