A Dhaka court on Friday sent Bangladesh Jatiya Party (BJP) chairman and former member of parliament Barrister Andaleeve Rahman Partho to jail in a case lodged over vandalising and setting Setu Bhaban in the capital’s Banani area on fire on 18 July.
Metropolitan Magistrate Rashidul Alam passed the order as the Detective Branch (DB) of police produced Partho before the court after the expiry of a three-day remand in the case.
The BJP chief was also placed on a five-day remand on 25 July in the same case filed with Banani police station.
On Friday, DB police Inspector Abu Sayeed Mia, also the investigating officer, pleaded that Partho should be kept behind bars until the investigation completes, while the defence filed a petition seeking his bail.
After hearing both sides, the court ordered to send the former lawmaker to jail rejecting the bail plea.
During the quota reform movement, a mob of 250/300 people on 18 July stormed into the premises of Setu Bhaban, vandalised many vehicles, motorbikes, ransacked different sheds and rooms, and later set those on fire. They attacked and assaulted many employees as well.
