A Dhaka court has sent Nurul Haque Nur, president of Gono Odhikar Parishad and former vice-president of Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU), to jail in connection with an arson attack at Kazipara metro rail station in the capital.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Saddam Hossain issued the order after police produced Nur before the court following the completion of a five-day remand on Thursday.
The investigating officer requested that the court keep Nur in custody until the investigation is concluded.
According to the case statement, on 19 July, between 4:30pm and 7:30pm, around 5,000 to 6,000 miscreants with local weapons, allegedly encouraged by central and local leaders of anti-government protesting parties and organisations, engaged in destructive activities at the metro rail station.
The attack caused an estimated financial loss of Tk100 crore.
