Water levels in all major rivers of Sylhet district have been rising over the last few days due to continuous heavy rain, triggering waterlogging in the main city and fears of flash flood in border upazilas.
Parts of Sylhet city suffered waterlogging on Thursday morning and a two-year old child drowned in knee-deep water in Kuarpara area. The city’s low-lying areas have been waterlogged four times in the last two weeks.
As much as 186-milimetre rainfall was recorded in the city on Thursday. In the entire district, Sylhet Weather Observatory Centre recorded 105 mm of rainfall from 6 am to 9 am while 349 mm rainfall was recorded in India’s Cherrapunji in the 24 hours till Thursday morning.
Sylhet Deputy Magistrate Sheikh Russel Hasan on Thursday ordered all government officials of upazilas and district administrations to remain prepared to tackle the possible flood, according to UNB.
In an SMS, the DC said a 535mm rainfall was recorded in Sylhet and Cherrapunji till 12 pm on Thursday and so all officials under the district have been asked to remain alert.
Shah Md Sajib Hossain, assistant meteorologist of Sylhet Weather Office, said the people Sylhet has been experiencing rains or thundershowers since Thursday morning which will continue.
All have been asked to be aware of lightning strikes.
