The Jagannath University (JnU) authorities on Thursday temporarily expelled a lecturer of the university’s film and television studies department and the chairman of the same department over allegations of sexually harassing a female student.
The decision by the university came a day after the Detective Branch of police quizzed the two teachers in front of the aggrieved student based on allegations raised by her, at the police unit’s headquarters in the capital.
The expelled lecturer is Abu Shahed Emon, and the relieved chairman is Professor Junaid Ahmed Halim, according to media reports. Abu Shahed is the prime accused in the incident, while Junaid allegedly provided him tacit support.
It is worth noting that the accuser actively demonstrated against the sexual abuse of former university student Fairuz Abantika, who committed suicide recently as the alleged abuses had become unbearable for her.
The accuser submitted a plea with the Detective Branch on Monday seeking security for her life. Later, she also sought intervention of Jagannath University Chancellor and Bangladesh President Mohammad Shahabuddin.
